What the CMS rating means

CMS publishes an overall hospital quality star rating from 1 to 5 for hospitals that report enough measures. It summarises five groups — mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely & effective care — each built from dozens of individual measures. A 5-star hospital performs well across groups relative to national averages; 1 star means it performs worse. The rating is a comparison tool, not a verdict: small hospitals, specialty hospitals and those with too few cases are often unrated.

This directory reproduces official CMS data. It is not medical advice — for an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
